John Barnard Jenkins was born in Cardiff in 1933 and served as a non-commissioned officer in the British Army's medical corps. Around 1963 he effectively took over the leadership of the Welsh nationalistic movement Mudiad Amddiffyn Cymru. It was Jenkins who masterminded the ultimately failed bombing campaign in an attempt to disrupt the investiture of Prince Charles at Caernarfon in 1969. Following a tip-off, Jenkins was arrested In November 1969 and, in April 1970, sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for his part in the event.
