Matthew Lewis Vaughan Davies, 1st Baron Ystwyth (1840-1935), from Tan-y-bwlch, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, was Liberal MP for Cardiganshire, 1895-1920. Originally, he had held Conservative views, standing as the Tory candidate in 1885. His wife, Mary (d. 1926), who had a Liberal background, changed his attitude, and in 1892 he supported the Liberal candidate for Cardiganshire, before standing himself in 1895. His political career was undistinguished. He was created 1st Baron Ystwyth in 1921. He was involved in the formation of the Cardiganshire Battery, 2nd Welsh Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, in 1908.
