He married Eliza (d. 1916), daughter of Capt. William Hobson; they had five sons and three daughters. Sir Rendel was engineer for the London Dock Co. in 1856. He originally visited India in 1857-1858, and he was a member of the Commission to determine narrow gauge for Indian Railways, in 1870.
