Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel (1829-1918) was a civil engineer, consulting engineer to the India Office, the East India Railway, and other Indian railways. His parents were James Meadows Rendel (1799-1856) and Catherine Jane Rendel née Harris (1797-1884); his brothers were Lord Rendel (1834-1913) and George Wightwick Rendel (1833-1902). He married Eliza (d. 1916), daughter of Capt. William Hobson; they had five sons and three daughters. Sir Rendel was engineer for the London Dock Co. in 1856. He originally visited India in 1857-1858, and he was a member of the Commission to determine narrow gauge for Indian Railways, in 1870. His principal works include the Shadwell Basin and Royal Albert Dock, London, the Albert and Edinburgh Docks at Leith, Scotland, the Workington Dock and Harbour, Cumberland, and the Sukker Bridge over the Indus river. | |||
