His parents were James Meadows Rendel (1799-1856) and Catherine Jane Rendel née Harris (1797-1884); his brothers were Lord Rendel (1834-1913) and George Wightwick Rendel (1833-1902). He married Eliza (d. 1916), daughter of Capt. William Hobson; they had five sons and three daughters. Sir Rendel was engineer for the London Dock Co. in 1856. He originally visited India in 1857-1858, and he was a member of the Commission to determine narrow gauge for Indian Railways, in 1870.
