In 1853 he was accepted as a missionary by the London Missionary Society. His first wife was Margaret, daughter of the missionary Reverend David Griffiths. After a few years working in Shanghai he settled in Hankow in 1861. In 1899 he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of Edinburgh, and from the University of Wales in 1911, for his contribution to Chinese literature. He died in London on 25 July 1912 and was buried in Sketty, Swansea. / rank | |||
