Aneurin Williams (1859-1924) was a barrister, ironmaster and politician. He was born on 11 October 1859 in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, the second son of Edward Williams, ironmaster, and Mary Elizabeth Williams (née Trick). His father was the son of Taliesin Williams (Ab Iolo) and grandson of Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg). The family moved to Middlesbrough in 1865. Williams was a graduate of St John’s College, Cambridge, and was called to the Bar in 1884. He was for a time a partner of Linthorpe Ironworks, Middlesbrough. He was Liberal MP for Plymouth (1910), North West Durham (1914-1918) and Consett (1918-1922). In Parliament he was known for his support for co-partnership, profit-sharing, proportional representation and town planning and was chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, 1921-1922. He married Helen Pattinson (d. 1922) in 1888 and they had a son, Iolo Aneurin Williams, and a daughter, Helen Ursula Williams. Aneurin Williams died at Hindhead, Surrey, on 20 January 1924.
