    The Rev. Hugh Michael Hughes, OBE, BA, DD (1858-1933), Congregational minister, was born in Llanllechid, Caernarfonshire, the son of Michael and Elizabeth Hughes. He was educated at the Memorial College, Brecon, and later at Aberystwyth and Cardiff University Colleges, graduating in 1898. He was ordained in 1886 and held pastorates in Old Tabernacl, Holyhead, Grove Street, Liverpool and Ebenezer, Cardiff. He was the pastor for Ebenezer, Cardiff for nearly forty years. He was the editor of Y Tyst, the Welsh Congregational weekly, and secretary of `Y Gronfa', the Welsh Independent Chapel Debts Fund, for twenty years. He was also the President of the Congregational Union of Wales, the Vice-President of Cardiff University College, and occasionally the Chairman of the Committee of Brecon Memorial College. He was the author of several books: John Penry [1912], Griffith John, arwr China (1914), Yr Iesu Sicr, and Esboniad ar yr Ephesiaid. He married Mary Ann Howell. He died on 15 January 1933 in Cardiff.
