William Henry Mainwaring (1884-1971), a former miner, represented the constituency of Rhondda East as a Labour MP between 1933 and 1959. As secretary of the South Wales 'Unofficial Reform Committee', he co-wrote the constitution which appeared in The Miner's next step in 1912. After leaving the mines, he lectured in Economics at the Central Labour College in London, where he became Vice-Principal in 1919. He then acted as a miners' agent for the Rhondda district between 1924 and 1933, when he was elected to Parliament.
