Prof. Sir Goronwy Edwards (John Goronwy Edwards) (1891-1976), Knight, was born in Manchester, Lancashire, and was a student at Jesus College, Oxford, and later a postgraduate student at Manchester. He studied and later lectured on medieval history. He published Flint Pleas, 1283-1285 (1922); Calendar of Ancient Correspondence concerning Wales (1935) and Littere Wallie (1940), and was editor of English Historical Review, 1938-1959. He was appointed Director of the Institute of Historical Research and Professor of History at the University of London in 1948. He served on numerous committees and public bodies. He was Raleigh Lecturer of the British Academy, 1956, and Ford Lecturer at Oxford University, 1960-1961. He was knighted in 1960 and died in 1976.
