William Spurrell, lexicographer, grammarian, printer and publisher, was born in Carmarthen, where he served his printer's apprenticeship. On his return to the town from London in 1840, Spurrell established a printing and publishing office which soon became a prolific producer of his own Welsh-English and English-Welsh dictionaries and Welsh grammars.
