Statements
Edward (Ted) Rowlands, was born in Rhondda, Glamorgan, in 1940. He was the Labour Member of Parliament for the constituncies of Cardiff North, 1966-1970, for Merthyr Tydfil, 1972-1983, and Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, 1983-2001. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, 1969-1970 and 1974-1975, and Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1976-1979. From 1987-2001 he was a member of the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 2001 he stepped down as an MP, and, in 2004, he was created Baron Rowlands of Merthyr Tydfil and of Rhymney. In 2003 he was a member of the Richard Commission investigating the powers and electoral arrangements of the National Assembly of Wales. He now lives in Carmarthenshire.
