Thomas Stephens (1821-1875), antiquary and critic, was born in Pont Neath Vaughan, Glamorgan. He worked as a chemist in Merthyr Tydfil. From 1840 he was known as an 'eisteddfodwr', winning the prize at Abergavenny in 1848 for his dissertation on early Welsh literature. Stephens was also author of several essays and other works, including The Literature of the Kymry, first published in 1849.
